Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique that focuses on releasing restrictions that form in the fascia. Fascia is a connective tissue that forms a continuous web of support throughout the body. Every nerve, blood vessel, muscle and organ is encapsulated by or enmeshed in fascia. Healthy, well hydrated fascia should feel pliable and gelatinous, but the fascia can become restricted. Fascial restrictions can exert up to 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch on the surrounding tissues. This is more than enough pressure to change the body's alignment, create significant pain, or impact the function of digestion or neurological processes.
What causes fascial restrictions? Fascial restrictions can develop as a result of injury, high levels of inflammation in the body, surgical scars, habitual postures, or even emotional trauma. Since the fascia is one continuous web through the body, a restriction in one area can create pressure or dysfunction in completely different areas of the body. Understanding that the body is unified, Myofascial Therapists will look at the body as a whole- assessing restrictions and seeing how your overall posture and alignment affects you.
Myofascial release is a holistic, hands on approach that involves gentle sustained pressure to these areas of resistance. Our goal is not to force the restrictions to release but to wait for them to soften and help each client build new awareness of their body in the process.
