The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment or LSVT Loud program was developed in 1987 and has over 30 years of research supporting its effectiveness with treating patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. The principles repetition and solely focusing on exaggerating the amplitude of a patient's speech (working at being really loud) has been applied to physical movements as well (working on being really big).
The LSVT BIG program is structured to be an intense 4 week exercise program with the patient being treated by the Physical Therapist 4 days a week for all four weeks. The exercises consist of an exercise protocol in combination with work on walking and a focus on specific tasks that each individual patient finds difficult.
The LSVT BIG program has been proven to be one of the most successful treatments in improving movement and slowing the effects of Parkinson's Disease.
